Washington, D.C. -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement on unemployment numbers for May issued today by the Department of Labor.

?Today?s unemployment numbers demonstrate that this is no time to rest. The hard reality is far too many Americans are out of work, far too many Americans are worried about losing their homes, and far too many families are concerned about being able to make ends meet.

?The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is beginning to help and American optimism is beginning to take hold in the private sector. And Americans are expecting their leaders to continue to strengthen our economy, by making quality health care more affordable and investing in comprehensive energy solutions that will create clean energy jobs. These steps will be essential to our long-term economic competitiveness and 21st century American prosperity.

?The New Direction Congress will lead the way, and we will do so with fiscal discipline, responsibility and accountability."
