Pelosi Statement on March Jobs Report
April 3, 2015
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 126,000 jobs, and unemployment remained at 5.5 percent. This marks the 61st consecutive month of private sector job growth:
"Today's job report shows that we must build on our momentum and strengthen job growth, and we must continue to expand opportunities for working people and middle-class families. Despite gains, many American families still feel squeezed and expect Congress to put their needs before the wealthy and well-connected by presenting policies that create new jobs and ensure higher wages for hard-working American families.
"Yet, last week, House Republicans voted for a budget that will drag our economy back. According to the Economic Policy Institute, House Republicans' ‘work harder for less' budget will destroy 2.9 million jobs in 2017, and decrease economic growth by 2.5 percent. Republicans have voted for a plan to give big tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy while making it harder for American families to buy a home, send a child to college, and enjoy a secure and comfortable retirement.
"The American people have had enough of Republicans' trickle-down economics. We need middle class economics that empowers hard-working families with bigger paychecks and better infrastructure. Now is the time to invest in a strong future of research, innovation, education and equal pay, and to create good-paying jobs repairing and modernizing our roads, railways and transit systems. Together, we can reignite the American dream and ensure that we have an economy that works for everyone, not just the privileged few."
