Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 192,000 jobs. With businesses adding 192,000 jobs, this marks the 49th consecutive month of private sector job growth:

"Today's jobs report shows our economy continues to move in the right direction. Yet with millions of Americans across the country still struggling, Congress must do more to create jobs and build an economy that works for everyone.

"The latest Ryan Republican budget takes us in the wrong direction. It is a recipe for recession – an attack on our seniors, our students, our workers and our families that will cost three million jobs over the next two years. The Ryan Republican budget protects tax breaks for millionaires and corporations sending American jobs overseas, while raising taxes on the middle class. The Republican plan would end the Medicare guarantee, while gutting commitments to education, innovation, and job training that are essential to our economic competitiveness. Their proposal rejects comprehensive immigration reform, a critical step that will create jobs, empower small businesses, energize the economy, and reduce the deficit by nearly a trillion dollars.

"This is not a 'path to prosperity'; this is a path to economic ruin. The American people deserve better. Democrats believe we must work to create jobs, strengthen the middle class, build ladders of opportunity, and lay the foundations for a future of shared prosperity – an America where no one is left out or left behind. To meet our goals, we must start now by renewing emergency unemployment insurance, raising the minimum wage, and unleashing the full potential of America's women. Together, we must reignite the American Dream."
