Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released this statement after the International Olympic Committee awarded the 2028 Olympic Games to Los Angeles:
“As a proud Californian, it is my pleasure to congratulate the people of Los Angeles on securing the return of the Olympic Games to American shores for 2028. A city of big dreams and boundless aspirations, legendary achievements and commitment to progress, Los Angeles exemplifies the principle enshrined in the Olympic Charter: ‘Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example, social responsibility and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles.’
“The spirit of sport unifies our country and brings us closer together. Hosting the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles will build enduring friendships between athletes and visitors throughout the world, while driving smart, job-creating investments in local infrastructure. The fiscally sound agreement reached by Mayor Eric Garcetti, Casey Wasserman and the Los Angeles bid committee also allows for investments that will open new doors for young Californians to participate in sports.
“My colleagues and I send our warmest congratulations to the people of the city of Los Angeles as they prepare to welcome the world to the City of Angels.”
