Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the introduction of the Protect American Jobs and Exports Act by Congressman Denny Heck (D-WA), a bill to extend the Export-Import Bank charter for seven years:
“The Export-Import Bank is an essential tool in enabling American manufacturers to access and compete in foreign markets – supporting thousands of small businesses and more than 200,000 jobs across the country. The Export-Import Bank helps finance the exports of American-made manufactured goods and services especially when alternative financing is not available. Further, the Export-Import Bank is fiscally responsible by operating at no cost to the taxpayers, paying for itself out of the fees it collects.
“On a level playing field, American workers and businesses have no equal in the world. The Export-Import Bank helps American firms compete against foreign companies with foreign backing, expanding the market for American products and creating jobs here in America.
“Congress must act to extend the bank’s charter before it expires in September. It is my hope that the House will move swiftly to consider Congressman Heck’s bipartisan legislation to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank’s charter for seven years. Congressional Democrats stand firmly on the side of creating jobs by boosting U.S. exports and thereby reducing our trade deficit. We cannot afford to delay, and surrender our global competitiveness.”
