San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in recognition of Labor Day:

“Every Labor Day, America pays tribute to the hard-working men and women who are the beating heart of our economy and the backbone of our democracy.  When working people succeed, America succeeds – and, this weekend, we rededicate ourselves to defending their rights and expanding their opportunities.

“House Democrats are working to bring bigger paychecks to all America’s working families.  Hard-working families need middle-class economics, not Congressional Republicans’ trickle-down, special interest priorities.  We must continue to work to create good-paying jobs, raise the federal minimum wage, and empower families with paid sick leave and paid family leave. We must act to guarantee women the dignity of equal pay for equal work, and ensure that all Americans have the right to work free from the shadow of discrimination.

“Middle-class economics also means that a hard day’s work should lead to a fair day’s pay.  Today, millions of Americans work long hours without the overtime pay they should have earned.  Amid this Republican Congress’ continued assault on working families, House Democrats will fight to protect the Obama Administration’s efforts to extend overtime pay protections to nearly 5 million workers.  Alongside the labor movement and working people in communities across the country, we will continue to fight for fairness and opportunity for all, not just the wealthy and well-connected.  On this Labor Day, let us continue to work together to build a future that delivers justice and prosperity for all the working people of our country.”
