San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 288,000 jobs, and the unemployment rate fell to 6.1 percent. With businesses adding 262,000 jobs, this marks the 52nd consecutive month of private sector job growth:

"Today's jobs report shows our economy is moving forward. Yet too many Americans across the country are still struggling to find work and make ends meet, and we must do more to create jobs and build an economy that works for everyone.

"House Republicans' relentless obstruction and dysfunction are holding back our growth and threatening hundreds of thousands of American jobs. Republicans refuse to raise the minimum wage that would give a long overdue pay raise to at least 25 million hardworking Americans. They refuse to renew the emergency unemployment insurance that millions of American families rely on to weather the crisis of long-term unemployment. Republicans are even considering a potential body blow to American manufacturers' ability to compete overseas and create jobs here at home.

"With the Highway and Transit Trust Fund rapidly drying up, House Republicans' culture of crisis is endangering hundreds of thousands of good-paying construction jobs and infrastructure projects across the country. Our economy cannot afford more of Republicans' contempt for working families, or their disinterest in creating jobs. The American people deserve better, and Democrats will continue fighting to grow our economy, expand opportunity, strengthen the middle class, and reignite the American Dream."
