Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 255,000 jobs in July, including adding 217,000 private sector jobs. The economy has added a total of 15 million private sector jobs since early 2010.

"July's strong jobs report shows our economy continues to forge ahead. Yet Congress should be doing more to further energize our economy with long-overdue investments in innovation, education and infrastructure to build a stronger America for every community.

"Unfortunately, when it comes to creating jobs or addressing public health emergencies such as Zika, House Republicans have put their radical obstruction ahead of the needs of the American people. Hundreds of pregnant American women have been infected with Zika, and Republicans are taking the longest summer Congressional recess in at least 60 years.

"Instead of stacking the deck for the special interests, the Republican Congress should focus on securing the future of hard-working families. Republicans should reconvene the Congress to immediately pass the bipartisan Zika funding bill that had been approved by the Senate by an overwhelming vote of 89 to 8 back in May. House Democrats will keep fighting for Congress to act on Zika and our Stronger America agenda to create jobs, raise wages and secure the future of every American family."
