Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after Appropriations Ranking Member Nita Lowey, Labor-HHS Subcommittee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro and Legislative Branch Subcommittee Ranking Member Debbie Wasserman Schultz introduced an emergency supplemental appropriations bill to address the Zika virus:

“Today, Democrats have introduced an emergency supplemental bill that will provide the swift and decisive action needed to help protect American communities from the Zika virus this summer. While Republicans inexplicably block action to protect America’s expectant mothers from Zika, Democrats are continuing to demand the robust emergency resources American families need.

“Twice, Republicans on the House Appropriations Committee have blocked emergency resources to fight the Zika virus – even voting down emergency resources on the same day the CDC confirmed that the Zika virus causes irreversible brain defects.

“Republicans’ inaction in the face of the threat that the Zika virus poses for millions of Americans this summer, including more than two million pregnant women, could have devastating consequences. Democrats will continue to call on the Republican Congress to ‘do your job’ and stop standing in the way of protecting American communities.”
