Pelosi Statement on International Women’s Day
Contact: Speaker’s Press Office,
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in recognition of International Women’s Day:
“Each International Women’s Day we recognize the generations of women and girls whose persistent, dissatisfied voices have led the movement toward genuine equality, a promise for which we all must continue to fight.
“This year, we mark International Women’s Day as we observe the centennial of the 19th Amendment granting American women the right to vote. This transformative victory unleashed the power of American women to have a voice in our democracy, yet women in our own country and around the world continue to face countless barriers to equality. Every woman, everywhere, deserves the opportunity to reach her full potential, with respect and recognition in the workforce, security and dignity in society and a voice and a vote in government. Nothing is more wholesome to our politics, our economies and our societies than the increased participation and leadership of women – both here at home and around the world.
“Today, and every day, undaunted women and girls in every corner of the globe are standing on the shoulders of giants, stepping up, speaking out and securing our rightful place at the table – at the head of the table. Inspired by their leadership, we must defend the rights we have won, build on the victories of the past and advance a future defined by equal rights, equal dignity and equal opportunity for all.”
