Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on International Women's Day, which falls tomorrow. This year's theme is "Equality for Women is Progress for All."

"International Women's Day is an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the empowerment of women everywhere – to recognize that the economic, social, and political success of women is essential to the success of our communities; to embrace the notion that justice for women means growth for our economy and for all nations.

"This year's theme reflects this fundamental truth: ‘equality for women is progress for all.' Acting on this ideal must be our charge each and every day. Across the globe, living up to this pledge entails protecting women from violence, investing in women entrepreneurs, respecting women's basic human rights, and raising women up to positions of leadership. When countries lift up their mothers and daughters, their families are more secure, their futures are more peaceful, and their economies are more prosperous.

"At home, upholding this commitment means enacting an agenda that unleashes the power of women across our economy. It means embracing House Democrats' economic agenda for women and families – ‘When Women Succeed, America Succeeds' – founded on fair pay, paid family and medical leave, and affordable, quality child care for all. It means echoing the theme of this day by building a country more equal, more just, and more true to our ideals, always recognizing that when women succeed, America succeeds.

"On this International Women's Day, let us ensure that equality for women is more than a simple slogan, but a promise made and a promise kept. Let us work together to spur progress for women so we can secure progress for all."
