Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released this statement on Hurricane Irma, which has claimed the lives of at least 62 people in the Caribbean and Southern United States:
“The American people send our thoughts and love to those impacted by the horrific devastation of Hurricane Irma. Our prayers go out to the millions pummeled by life-altering damage to their communities, who continue to be overwhelmed by unprecedented and uncontrolled flooding, or stranded in shelters, nursing homes or residences without food, supplies or electricity. We must act swiftly to address the immense suffering and danger still facing vulnerable seniors and families in the hurricane’s aftermath, or else we will see more tragedies like the six seniors who died today in their nursing home without air conditioning.
“Amidst this tragic destruction and displacement, Congress has a duty to show strong, bipartisan support for those in need. The Republican Congress must come to the immediate assistance of the Southeast United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, continue to provide the emergency support needed by the survivors of Hurricane Harvey and recognize the need to remember mitigation as we rebuild. Congress must also take action to pass a long-term reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program to ensure continued availability of affordable flood insurance.
“Democrats will never waver in our support for the families impacted by this devastation and for the courageous emergency responders who have come to their aid. We will stand with the communities hit by the cruel blow of Irma now, and throughout the long road to recovery.”
