Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after Republicans in the House Appropriations Committee voted today against emergency funding to address the Zika virus, defeating an amendment offered by Labor-HHS Subcommittee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro:
“Today, Republicans doubled down on their stunning refusal to protect American communities from the threat of the Zika virus – voting for the second time in two weeks to block emergency resources to combat the Zika epidemic.
“Last week, on the same day that the CDC confirmed that Zika causes irreversible microcephaly, Republicans blocked emergency funding to protect American communities. Even now, knowing how serious Zika could be for expectant mothers and children in our country, Republicans decided to block the resources we need to confront this emergency.
“We are running out of time to act. Republicans’ appalling fecklessness in the face of this frightening public health emergency is beyond dangerous: it could have devastating consequences for thousands of American children and families. Democrats will continue to demand Congress act to provide the emergency resources equal to the seriousness of the threat Zika poses to American communities.”
