Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the House passed a compromise transportation bill:

“For months, Democrats, including President Barack Obama, have been calling on our Republican colleagues to bring to the floor bipartisan transportation legislation to create jobs and legislation to prevent an interest rate hike for more than 7 million students. Republicans delay and obstruction has hurt small businesses and middle-class families, by injecting uncertainty into our economy. Because Democrats made these issues too hot to handle, finally House Republicans have acted today; they do so with not a minute to spare.

“This legislation reflects our Democratic commitment to rebuilding America by creating or saving more than two million jobs, putting workers in the hard-hit construction sector back to work on highway and transit projects across the country, and investing in public transit, highways, roads, and bridges. And by preventing student loan interest rates from doubling, it invests in America’s future strength.

“Since they took control of Congress, time and again House Republicans have played brinksmanship with the future of middle-class Americans. I hope we can put an end to this pattern. The American people deserve better.”
