Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released this statement after House Republicans voted unanimously in favor of the display of the Confederate Battle Flag at the Citadel and other institutions that train military officers with taxpayer funds, and also in favor of a Republican provision that would overturn President Obama’s historic executive order banning anti-LGBT discrimination in federal contracts:
“Tonight, the Republican majority doubled down on their efforts to turn discrimination into legislation. House Republicans unanimously voted to target LGBT Americans for discrimination and ensure that American military officers may be trained with taxpayer dollars beneath the symbol of hate that is the Confederate Battle Flag.
“This reckless Republican Congress chose to push bigotry into the national defense bill that is supposed to protect every American. Whatever their empty talk about being shocked by Donald Trump’s hateful rhetoric, House Republicans’ votes utterly expose the reality of their own discriminatory agenda.
“House Republicans should reevaluate their reckless radicalism and join with Democrats to strengthen the security and protect the equality of all Americans.”
