Washington, D.C – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins tomorrow:

"Hispanic Heritage Month is a chance for all Americans to celebrate the extraordinary contributions of our vibrant Latino community to our nation. For many generations, Latinos and Latinas have made America more American and moved our country closer to realizing our founding motto: E Pluribus Unum – from many, one.

"Today, whether through cultural and artistic achievements, scientific innovations, service in our armed forces or entrepreneurial spirit, Latinos and Latinas are an integral part of our rich American story. As we celebrate the beauty and vitality of American Latino culture and history, we must fight back against racism, xenophobia, acts of hate and ugly, divisive political rhetoric. The Trump Administration's senseless attacks on our country's immigrant heritage, the barbaric separation of immigrant families seeking asylum and the failure to protect our courageous young Dreamers – all with the complicity of the Republican Congress – undermine our core values of freedom, equality and diversity.

"As we approach the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Maria, we honor the memory of the thousands of our fellow citizens in Puerto Rico who tragically lost their lives. Democrats will continue to advocate for Puerto Rico's full recovery and a brighter future for the 3.5 million U.S. citizens who call Puerto Rico home.

"House Democrats are committed to building a better future that honors the contributions of our Latino community. We will continue to fight For The People as we work to ensure that our nation always stays true to its promise of hope and opportunity for all."
