San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement marking four years since the racist act of violence that killed nine parishioners at the historic Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C. on June 17, 2015:

"Four years ago, in a horrific and heartbreaking act of hate and brutality, nine beautiful souls were murdered as they gathered together in prayer at the Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston. For the countless friends, families and survivors, the pain and grief of that horrible day remains a constant reminder of the work we must do to fight racism and end the daily tragedy of gun violence in our communities and our nation.

"Inspired by the courage of the Mother Emanuel community and the millions of young people who have stood up to say ‘enough is enough,' House Democrats are taking commonsense, long overdue steps to end the gun violence epidemic in America. In February, the House Democratic Majority, passed H.R. 8 to ensure universal background checks for every gun purchase, and H.R. 1112 to close the Charleston loophole that enabled this devastating hate crime. Now, the Senate must end its reckless obstruction and bring these vital bills up for a vote.

"On this solemn remembrance, the enduring faith and love of the Mother Emanuel congregation continue to be a source of strength for all those who fight to end the epidemic of gun violence and the scourge of racism and hatred that undermine our democracy. We will not rest until every American can go to school, to work or practice their faith free from fear and violence."
