Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the anniversary of the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, which occurred on December 14, 2012:
“Five years ago, the lives of twenty beautiful children and six extraordinary educators were tragically cut short in an act of unthinkable tragedy and horror. Today, our grief remains raw, our hearts remain broken but our spirits remain strong.
“Since that heartbreaking day, families in Orlando, San Bernardino, Las Vegas, Sutherland Springs and countless communities in between have suffered the tragedy of gun violence. Yet, Republicans in Congress continue to prioritize their allegiance to the NRA above the survival of innocent Americans, and have fought tooth and nail against commonsense gun violence prevention measures. Just last week, House Republicans voted to give the NRA an early Christmas gift by passing a bill that endangers public safety by forcing states to recognize the concealed carry standards from every other state, even those with dramatically weaker standards and no concealed carry permit requirements.
“Scripture tells us that ‘children are a heritage from God.’ With those words and the memories of those lost in Newtown etched in our hearts, let us move forward with strength and purpose to ensure no other family is forced to endure such heartbreak. We must not relent until all our communities are safe from gun violence.”
