San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today in recognition of Earth Day:

"For more than four decades, Americans have come together on Earth Day to renew our commitment to protecting the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the planet we all call home. As students, families and communities across the country celebrate this day with service, we rededicate ourselves to the work of conservation, to the promise of clean energy, and to our duty to confront the accelerating challenge of climate change.

"Our time calls for fresh determination and urgency. We must lead the way in science, technology, and renewable energy – and ensure that we are leaving a healthy environment to our children and our grandchildren. Democrats in Congress are continuing to push for action, working to increase our investments in innovation and efficiency, reducing emissions and energy costs, and strengthening America's claim on the new industries and good-paying jobs of the clean energy economy.

"We cannot afford to deny the reality of climate change, or to roll back our commitment to a sustainable future for all the generations to come. Yet, all too often, our environment has come under direct assault from our Republican colleagues' toxic political games. We will need to work together if we are to meet the challenge before us. On this Earth Day, let us embrace our shared stewardship of this planet, preserve our environment, strengthen our economy, and avert the crisis of global warming."
