Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October:

â€Å"Domestic Violence Awareness Month is a time to rededicate ourselves to the goal of ending violence against women and children once and for all. No one should have to live in fear in their own home, and we must continue to work to eliminate these acts of violence from our society.

â€Å"Though the rate of domestic violence has dropped as prevention and awareness efforts have increased over the last 15 years, there is much work to be done. One in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. Nearly 1.3 million women will confront these violent acts this year. America's leaders and our nation's families must not let this stand.

â€Å"As we observe the 15th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act this year, let us recognize the need to keep up the campaign against domestic violence, increase awareness of family violence, and invest in a new effort to prevent violence of all kinds.â€
