Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and her Congressional Delegation met Friday with
President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella.
Rome– Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released this statement following meetings with President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella and Chamber of Deputies President Laura Boldrini on the first day of a Congressional Delegation to Italy and Ukraine:
"It was an honor to visit with President Sergio Mattarella and Chamber of Deputies President Laura Boldrini.
"Our delegation discussed security cooperation, regional stability, and threats to the international community posed by ISIS. We also agreed that a comprehensive approach is needed to address migration. Views were exchanged on advancing economic growth and expanding opportunities for the people of Italy, Europe and the United States.
"Earlier in the day, our delegation was greeted by the Marine Corps Detachment at the U.S. Embassy in Rome. U.S. Ambassador to Italy John R. Phillips and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture David J. Lane then led a country team briefing highlighting security and law enforcement cooperation, food sustainability, and the global economic recovery.
"Today's meetings reaffirmed that a strong U.S.-Italy relationship is important to both countries. We look forward to briefings tomorrow in Naples at the Allied Joint Force Command Headquarters and the U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa, home of the U.S. 6th Fleet."
