San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in honor of Cinco de Mayo:

"Cinco de Mayo is a day of celebration, commemorating the remarkable triumph of a poorly-armed Mexican militia against the better-equipped Imperial French army at the Battle of Puebla. Through their valor and perseverance, the courageous militia stood strong in the face of incredible odds to defend their rights, their heritage and their country. Today, we honor their heroism, we celebrate the proud history of our friends and neighbors in Mexico, and we give thanks for the innumerable contributions that Mexican Americans and the entire Latino community have made to enrich our communities.

"On this festive day, all Americans celebrate the hopes, aspirations and determination to pursue the American Dream that generations of Mexicans, Latinos and all immigrants have brought to our nation. The beauty, diversity and wonderful traditions of Latino culture have strengthened the fabric of our country and honored America's founding creed – E pluribus unum, out of many, one.

"Democrats take great pride in our heritage as a nation of immigrants, and we will continue to stand strong against the forces of hatred and xenophobia that threaten our democracy and our values. To honor the energy, optimism and drive of all who call America home, we will continue to advance progress as we work to build a future of prosperity and peace for generations to come."
