Pelosi Statement on Cinco de Mayo

San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in honor of Cinco de Mayo:

"On Cinco de Mayo, we commemorate the courageous Mexican militia who overcame incredible odds to defend themselves, their families, their country and their heritage against a better-equipped Imperial French army. As we celebrate the heroic victory in the Battle of Puebla and the proud history of our Mexican neighbors, we also honor the innumerable contributions that Mexican Americans and the entire Latino community have made to our nation.

"All Americans draw strength and inspiration from the vibrant culture and diversity of the Latino community in America. Whether recent immigrants or descendants of families who have called this nation home for generations, these proud Americans enrich our country with their dreams and boundless determination, and in the process, make America more American.

"In the spirit of Cinco de Mayo, we recommit ourselves to lifting up this proud history and the stories of these patriotic Americans by combatting the forces of bigotry and xenophobia that threaten our values as a nation of immigrants. While the Trump Administration intimidates Latino communities across the country and undermines our vital friendship with Mexico, Democrats will never stop fighting for a better, more inclusive future for all Americans, free from fear and discrimination."
