San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in honor of Cinco de Mayo, which falls on Sunday, May 5th:

“On Cinco de Mayo, we remember the extraordinary victory of a poorly-armed Mexican militia over larger, stronger, better-equipped French forces in the Battle of Puebla. For 151 years, this date has been a source of pride to the people of Mexico – and here in the United States, it has been an opportunity to honor the contributions, heritage, and rich history of Mexican Americans and all Hispanic Americans.

“The character of our country is strengthened each day by the arrivals of immigrants to our shores – men and women, students and entrepreneurs, striving for a better life and seeking the American Dream. Each generation of immigrants makes America more American. Now, we have a chance to build on that legacy by enacting comprehensive immigration reform that secures our borders, unites families, reflects our values, and secures a pathway to citizenship.

“The story of Cinco de Mayo remains an inspiration to families in the U.S. and Mexico. Today, we celebrate it once more, take heed of its lessons, and, like the heroes of Puebla, look toward the future with optimism, courage, and hope.”
