San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in honor of Cinco de Mayo:
"Cinco de Mayo marks the extraordinary triumph of a small Mexican militia at the Battle of Puebla, defying nearly impossible odds to defend their heritage and homeland from the Imperial French army. As we remember these valiant warriors and their hard-won victory, we celebrate the proud history of our Mexican neighbors as well as the rich contributions that Mexican Americans and all Latinos have made to our nation for centuries.
"The stories of our Latino communities are woven into our national fabric, from the hopes of recent arrivals to the legacies of families proudly American for generations. Our nation draws its strength from our beautiful diversity, and every family arriving in our country to build a better life makes America more American. That is why House Democrats proudly passed the American Dream and Promise Act, a first step to restoring compassion and justice to our broken immigration system. Working closely with President Biden, we will not relent until we harmonize our policies with our values.
"Nearly 160 years after the heroes of the Battle of Puebla bravely defended their national heritage, we continue to draw strength and inspiration from their spirit. As we celebrate Cinco de Mayo, let us pledge to uphold our own heritage as a nation of immigrants, a beacon of hope and an extended hand to those yearning to breathe free."
