Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in honor of the 85th anniversary of Cesar Chavez’s birthday, which falls on Saturday, March 31:

“Cesar Chavez dedicated his life to the cause of the common good, the movement for workers’ rights and civil rights, the belief in fairness and opportunity for Hispanic Americans and all Americans. He embraced non-violence and changed our nation for the better. He acted to shine a bright light on the plight of farmworkers – and to secure a future of fair wages, decent benefits, and safer working conditions.

“By acting to right the wrongs of history, by inspiring millions to join his campaign for justice, Cesar Chavez advanced the essence of the American dream – the ability of America’s workers and middle class to earn a living wage, support their families, and retire with dignity.

“His message started in the experience of farmworkers, but it did not end there. It resonated across lines of ethnicity, race, and background. It reminded us of the values all Americans share: hard work, responsibility, and equality.

“As we celebrate what would have been his 85th birthday, we remember the words of Cesar Chavez: ‘We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community.’ On this Cesar Chavez Day, let’s take these words to heart – continuing the fight for progress; securing prosperity and opportunity for all; putting the American dream in reach for every American.”
