Washington, D.C. â€" Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on California’s legal challenge to the Bush Administration’s efforts to block the states’ ability to limit greenhouse gases:

â€Å"California Attorney General Jerry Brown has once again taken the lead in efforts to safeguard the environment and the health of our state’s residents. In our landmark energy legislation passed into law last month, Congress specifically chose not to undercut the authority of the states to set higher standards than the federal government; the Bush Administration’s action is completely without justification.

â€Å"In a recent conversation with EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson, I told him that I strongly support the inquiry by Chairman Henry Waxman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform into the decision by the EPA to block tougher clean air standards. I expect the full cooperation of his agency and all other members of the Administration.”
