Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after an agreement was reached to form a bipartisan commission to investigate and report on the causes and circumstances of the January 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol Complex:
"On January 6, one of the darkest days in our history, our temple of democracy was attacked by insurrectionists. The gleeful desecration of our Capitol resulted in multiple deaths, physical harm to over 140 members of law enforcement and terror and trauma among staff, support workers and Members.
"It is imperative that we seek the truth of what happened on January 6 with an independent, bipartisan 9/11-type Commission to examine and report upon the facts, causes and security relating to the terrorist mob attack. Thanks to Homeland Security Chairman Bennie Thompson and Ranking Member John Katko, today a bipartisan agreement to form such a commission has been reached, with legislation to create it set to reach the Floor as soon as next week.
"Protecting the U.S. Capitol Complex and all who serve and work in it is of the highest priority, and therefore, the House will also soon move forward with an emergency security supplemental which will provide for the safety of Members and harden the Capitol against further attacks."
