Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement on the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) creation of the "Closer to Zero'' campaign, which will reduce the levels of toxic heavy metals in baby foods, and which follows the House Oversight Committee investigation led by Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi into the level of heavy metals in top baby food brands:
"As House Speaker, I salute the Biden Administration's new initiative to address the serious, long-neglected crisis of toxic metals in our children and babies' food. This important step forward for the health and safety of our children is possible thanks to the tireless oversight efforts of House Democrats, led by Committee on Oversight and Reform Chair Carolyn Maloney and Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy Chair Raja Krishnamoorthi.
"When people ask me the three most important issues facing the Congress, I always say: our children, our children, our children. This effort takes an important step to protect the health and well-being of our nation's children. It is unacceptable that so many of the most popular baby foods are tainted with dangerous levels of toxins, which science tells us cause serious and often irreversible damage to brain development.
"As House Democrats work with the Biden Administration on this initiative, we look forward to passing the Baby Food Safety Act to take further steps to ensure the safety of baby food. Democrats are committed to ensuring that every parent can be confident that their baby's food is safe and that they can grow up healthy."
