Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released this statement following a horrific attack that killed dozens of people in Nice, France on Bastille Day:

“Today, as families celebrated Bastille Day across France, an apparent terrorist attack in Nice killed scores of people and injured many more. Our sorrow is only deepened on this proud French holiday celebrating the revolutionary power of these simple ideas: liberté, équalité, fraternité.

“Tonight, all Americans join in mourning the dead, praying for the wounded, and standing in solidarity with the people of France – America’s oldest ally. Together, we will take strong and smart action to eliminate the threats that seek to extinguish the hope in our hearts and in our communities. Together, we must confront and defeat the ideologies that contribute to the violence we’ve witnessed in recent months. Hatred in all its forms and injustice everywhere must end.

“Tonight, we mourn and rededicate ourselves to preventing all acts of hate and terror. May the people of France and loved ones anxiously awaiting news in communities around the world find some solace in knowing that the American people share in their sadness at this difficult time.”
