San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 151,000 jobs in August, including adding 126,000 private sector jobs. The economy has added a total of 15.1 million private sector jobs since early 2010.
"August's jobs report shows our economy moving forward, but more can and must be done to create good-paying jobs and raise wages for hard-working Americans. That's why House Democrats continue to fight for our Stronger America agenda to ensure that every American can have confidence in a future of security and opportunity for their families. We must build an economy that works for everyone.
"Yet at every turn, Republicans have chosen callous obstruction instead of meaningful action for America's families. House Republicans have prevented vital investments to create jobs and raise wages, and blocked desperately needed resources to fight Zika. Almost 1,600 pregnant women in America already have confirmed cases of the Zika virus, and Republicans chose to shut down Congress for the longest summer recess in modern times without enacting any funding to help.
"Republicans must stop putting their special interest obstruction ahead of the needs of the American people. When Republicans finally return to Washington next week, they should immediately act to pass the Senate’s bipartisan Zika funding bill, which provides $1.1 billion in emergency resources to fight the Zika virus and contains no poison pills. House Democrats will keep fighting for this Republican Congress to join us to act on Zika, create jobs, raise wages and secure the future of every hard-working American."
