Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 223,000 jobs, and unemployment dropped to 5.4 percent. With businesses adding 213,000 jobs, this represents the 62nd consecutive month of private sector job growth:

"April's jobs report represents another good step in the right direction. However, it is clear that more must be done to create jobs and raise the wages of America's hard-working families.

"Unfortunately, Republicans are busy stacking the deck for the special interests, and stoking uncertainty for everyone else. They have recklessly advanced a budget blueprint that decreases our growth and destroys millions of jobs. With urgent deadlines on the horizon, they still have no plan to pass the long-term highway and transit funding our nation needs. Republicans continue to bicker over the Export-Import Bank, threatening to deal a completely self-inflicted blow to American workers, American manufacturing, and American competitiveness overseas.

"Democrats want to fuel growth, create jobs and raise the wages of every American. We want to make it easier to buy a home, easier to send a child to college, easier to have a secure and enjoyable retirement. Hard-working families deserve a Congress focused on their opportunities, not more of Republicans' relentless special interest priorities."
