Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 115,000 jobs in April and the unemployment rate fell slightly to 8.1 percent. With private businesses creating 130,000 new jobs, this marks the 26th consecutive month of private sector job growth:

"While American entrepreneurs and businesses, large and small, continue to add private sector jobs, this report is a clear reminder that we have more work to do. Unfortunately, the Republican ‘do-nothing’ Congress has refused to act in a bipartisan way to spur economic growth.

“In recent weeks, House Republicans have refused to bring up the bipartisan Senate transportation bill that creates or saves more than 2 million jobs and rebuilds our roads, bridges, highways and railways. Instead, they have spent their time passing a budget that ends the Medicare guarantee while giving massive tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans, Big Oil, and companies that ship jobs overseas.

"It is time for Republicans to work with Democrats on our clear agenda to create jobs: to ‘Make It In America’ so we can expand our manufacturing base; to rebuild America's roads, bridges, highways, and rail lines; and to strengthen small businesses and the middle class. Democrats are committed to reigniting the American dream, building ladders of opportunity for Americans who work hard, take responsibility, and play by the rules."
