Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement to mark the two-year anniversary of the Supreme Court decision on marriage equality:
"Two years ago, the Supreme Court affirmed that equal justice under the law means marriage equality for LGBT Americans. With this historic decision for love, our nation moved closer to fulfilling the full promise of our ideals. No person should be denied their rights because of who they are or whom they love.
"As Justice Kennedy wrote in the Obergefell opinion, ‘No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family.' The Supreme Court asserted that LGBT families across America have same right to the dignity and privileges of marriage as anyone else. Now, we must remain vigilant against efforts to enable discrimination against LGBT families, whether in the courts, the Congress, or Republican statehouses.
"Today, we celebrate extraordinary progress toward equality, and renew our commitment to finish the march to equality for LGBT Americans everywhere. House Democrats are fighting with all our strength to pass the Equality Act, which would bring the full force of the Civil Rights Act to secure equality for LGBT people. We will never stop fighting, until all Americans can live authentic lives, full of dignity, pride and love."
