Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement today following the announcement by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson of proposed fuel economy rules to raise the national standards above 35 miles per gallon by 2016.

“Cars and trucks represent more than 30 percent of global warming emissions, and we simply cannot address the dual crises of our dangerous dependence on oil and global warming without improving the fuel efficiency of vehicles. Following the historic increase in vehicle fuel efficiency passed by the Congress and enacted in 2007, the Obama Administration has set forth a strong proposed rule that harmonizes EPA and DOT vehicle programs with vehicles standards in California and other states.

“Today's announcement represents another step forward by the Administration to develop a clean energy economy that preserves American jobs and competiveness while reducing dangerous pollution. We must all work together to take the next step, which is getting the House-passed clean energy jobs bill to the President's desk.â€
