Normandy, France – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement marking the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France. Speaker Pelosi is leading a bipartisan Congressional Delegation to mark the anniversary and today attended a ceremony at the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach attended by D-Day veterans and their families, active duty servicemembers, government and military officials and foreign dignitaries.

"Seventy-five years ago, tens of thousands of Allied forces landed in France to liberate a continent and free millions of men, women and children from the clutches of tyranny and oppression. In one of the greatest acts of heroism in human history, these brave soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy from the ground, sea and air, changing the world forever and earning our everlasting respect and gratitude.

"On D-Day, our American and Allied troops brought not only their courage, skill and devotion to duty to the shores of Europe, but also the hopes and values of freedom-loving people around the world. Three-quarters of a century later, their sacrifice remains a vivid reminder of the cost of freedom and the blessing of peace. As Members of Congress, government officials and leaders from around the world gather in France to pay tribute to these heroes this week, we solemnly remember our responsibility to honor them by working to build a future worthy of their sacrifice for generations to come.

"On this momentous day in history, our grateful nation gives thanks to the members of the Greatest Generation, including the millions of patriotic women workers, the Rosie the Riveters, and countless volunteers whose untiring efforts on the home front ensured that our soldiers had the resources and support they needed to achieve absolute victory. We must recognize the courage, spirit and service of these extraordinary men and women by continuing to advance the promise of freedom and democracy both at home and around the world, and by protecting our veterans, their caregivers and families. Today, and every day, we recommit ourselves to this solemn duty: just as our military leaves no one behind on the battlefield, we must leave no veteran behind when they return home."
