Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in recognition of the 40th anniversary of Title IX, which falls on Saturday:

“Over the last 40 years, Title IX has done nothing less than change the face of success – in the classroom, on the playing field, and in the halls of power – in this country. Ensuring equal opportunity for women and girls in education and athletics has had remarkable effects in every aspect of American life; we can credit Title IX for fostering the current generation of women athletes, but also doctors, engineers, and public servants. Our nation is strengthened by the participation of women and girls in every arena, at every level.

“Title IX is a model for bipartisan accomplishment; it was championed in the Congress by Congresswoman Patsy Mink and Senator Birch Bayh and signed into law by President Richard Nixon. Title IX is the manifestation of the American values of equality and opportunity.

“As we celebrate Title IX, we continue our efforts to level the playing field for American women. Democrats will continue to work on behalf of equal pay for women, who still make just 77 cents for every dollar men make, and to make certain that Title IX is protected, never eroded.”
