Pelosi Statement on 16.4 Million Uninsured Americans Gaining Coverage Under the ACA

March 16, 2015

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released the following statement after the Department of Health and Human Services announced that 16.4 million uninsured Americans have gained health insurance coverage since the Affordable Care Act became law nearly five years ago on March 23, 2010:

"Today's report is just the latest evidence that the Affordable Care Act is working. Thanks to this historic law, more than 16 million previously uninsured Americans now have quality, affordable health coverage.

"Health care should be a right for every American, not just a privilege for the few. In just five years, this landmark legislation has provided newfound health security to millions of American children, women, workers, and families. Due to the ACA, we are also making historic progress in reducing the disparities in health coverage that have plagued so many communities, with 2.3 million African American adults and 4.2 million Latino adults having secured coverage for themselves and their families.

"This report is good news of our families, our economy and our future. It is time for Republicans to end their obsession with destroying the Affordable Care Act and dismantling the health security of so many millions of Americans."
