San Francisco — Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement after 14.5 million Americans signed up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act during the 2022 open enrollment period, which ran from November 1, 2021 through January 15, 2022:

"Today's record-breaking number of health insurance sign-ups makes crystal clear that, thanks to President Biden and the Democratic Congress, health care is more affordable and accessible than ever. It is welcome news that 14.5 million Americans enrolled in ACA insurance since November 1st, the most ever to sign up during an open enrollment period, including many who lost coverage through no fault of their own due to the COVID crisis.

"The Affordable Care Act has served as a vital lifeline during the pandemic — and with our American Rescue Plan, Democrats dramatically lowered premiums so that millions are covered by a quality plan while saving families an average of $2,400. As we continue to battle the virus, ensuring quality, affordable and accessible health coverage will continue to be as important as ever to help keep our communities healthy. In a number of states, health insurance exchanges remain open through the end of this month, so there is still time for many Americans to sign up for an affordable plan.

"The Affordable Care Act stands as a pillar of health and financial security for American families, moving our nation closer toward a fundamental promise: that health care is a right, not a privilege. Democrats remain firmly committed to working toward this goal as we strive to bring down health care costs and prescription drug prices for workers, seniors and families across the country."
