"For years, the bipartisan, independent 9/11 Commission worked to fulfill its mandate to provide critical analysis of our government's response to the deadly attacks on 9/11 and develop recommendations to guard against future attacks. But after delivering its urgent recommendations in 2004, the Republican Congress failed to act. Only in 2007, under the new Democratic majority, did Congress finally pass the Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act, H.R. 1.

 

"The Democratic Congress gave our national and homeland security agencies the resources they needed to accomplish their critical mission: to protect and defend the American people from future acts of terror, while safeguarding our civil liberties. Empowered by the implementation of these critical recommendations, our government is now better able to work cooperatively across agencies and with our dedicated allies around the world. But as technologies evolve, so must our understanding of the threats we face and the strategies necessary to keep America safe and free.

 

"Democrats remain committed to honoring our solemn duty to protect the United States and all who live here. We will continue to call for strong and smart action to defend our national security from evolving threats and protect the integrity of our democracy from foreign attack. We also cannot fail to act in the face of new threats to our democracy itself.
