Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released this statement marking the 10th anniversary of the America COMPETES Act, a landmark piece of legislation that boosts America’s competitiveness by strengthening the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields:
“Ten years ago, the Democratic-led Congress passed the America COMPETES Act, a bold, effective bill that spurs innovation, creates good-paying American jobs and helps keep America number one in the world.  The Trump Administration has a duty to the American people to build on that progress, but instead has spent its first 200 days conspiring to gut job-creating investments in science, technology and research – while at the same time failing to offer a single real proposal to raise wages, create jobs and strengthen America’s economic leadership.
“The American people deserve better.  Democrats are offering a fresh vision for the future: A Better Deal: Better Jobs, Better Wages, Better Future, to make smart investments in the American workers and families.  As part of this ambitious agenda, we are pledging ourselves to the goal of creating good-paying, full-time jobs for 10 million more Americans in the next five years, lowering the surging cost of living for families and building an economy that gives working Americans the tools to succeed in the 21st century.
“Democrats know that investments in American workers are investments in the success and strength of our nation.  While Republicans continue to put their corporate and special interest friends before American families, Democrats will keep fighting to build an economy that works for everyone.”
