Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today marking the 69th anniversary of Israel's Independence Day, Yom Ha'atzmaut:

"Each Israeli Independence Day, we celebrate the inspiring birth, the miraculous growth and the continuing achievement of the Jewish state. In the face of near-constant threats to its very existence, Israel has forged ahead as a strong democracy, a safe-haven for immigrants, and a global leader in technology and entrepreneurship. Now, with each joyous independence day, the modern state of Israel affirms its status as the greatest political achievement of the 20th century.

"Just minutes after Israel declared independence, President Harry Truman recognized the Jewish state. So began an unbreakable friendship rooted in democracy, history, common ideals and a shared future. The U.S. commitment to Israel's security is total and unshakable. Together, we will continue to stand in steadfast solidarity with Israel against those who threaten her people.

"Each and every day, Israel makes real the promise of its founders – a dream that has made deserts bloom and cities thrive. From generation to generation, Israel's perseverance is a reflection of the values of the Jewish people: to promote peace, to pursue justice, to seek the common good. We pray for the day when Israel's people can live free from fear and when the dream of a just and lasting peace becomes a reality."
