Pelosi Statement Honoring Cesar Chávez Day

March 31, 2015
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in memory of the late civil rights and labor rights legend Cesar Chávez who was born on March 31, 1927:
"Today marks the 88th birthday of the late farm labor movement leader, Cesar Chávez, whose extraordinary leadership and commitment to justice continue to inspire civil rights movements in our country and around the world. Chávez galvanized the farmworkers' movement to guarantee that workers who grew and picked the food that helped feed our nation could also provide for their own families. Chávez's insistent, unyielding determination to win fair wages and fair treatment on American farms continues to strengthen America's future for all.
"Cesar Chávez's trailblazing legacy continues to ensure that all American families have the resources, opportunity, and liberty to live with dignity. His legendary leadership on behalf of workers inspires all who seek justice, whether on farms or in factories, on shop floors or in offices throughout our country, to work together to ensure that all people are treated with dignity in the workplace.
"In contemporary struggles to secure equal pay for equal work, to protect voting rights, to raise the minimum wage and unite families by passing comprehensive immigration reform, we are energized by Chávez's vision and iconic leadership. On this Cesar Chávez Day, let us honor his memory by ensuring that the American Dream is available for all people across our nation."
