Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement regarding the bipartisan House leadership meeting with President Hu Jintao of the People’s Republic of China:

“I appreciated the opportunity to join Speaker Boehner in extending our welcome to President Hu Jintao to the United States Capitol. The U.S.-China economic and trade relationship, North Korea, and human and religious rights in China and Tibet were among the issues discussed at the meeting.

“I had the opportunity to relay the concerns by Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle that Chinese human rights activist Liu Xiaobo was not permitted to travel to Norway to accept the Nobel Peace Prize in December, and about the continued detention of Liu and his wife Liu Xia, for peacefully exercising their rights to free expression.

“In response to my question on China’s commitments made regarding climate change in Cancun, I was pleased that President Hu agreed that this is an area where we can work to build a stronger relationship between our two nations.”
