Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today marking the 72nd anniversary of Israel's Independence Day, Yom Ha'atzmaut:

"With the founding of the State of Israel 72 years ago, the world witnessed one of the greatest political achievements of the 20th Century. Today, we celebrate Israel's birth and the great success it has achieved in the face of extraordinary challenges. For over 70 years, the people of Israel have harnessed their ingenuity, faith, courage and imagination to make deserts bloom and cities thrive, building a dynamic economy and culture that have strengthened and enriched our world.

"Since the moment of Israel's founding, the United States has been an unshakeable partner and trusted ally to the Jewish state. The stories of our two, proud nations are united by our shared commitment to mutual security and prosperity as well as our shared democratic values. That is why, last December, the House of Representatives passed a resolution reaffirming that ‘Only the outcome of a two-state solution that enhances stability and security for Israel, Palestinians and their neighbors can both ensure the state of Israel's survival as a Jewish and democratic state and fulfill the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people for a state of their own.'

"This Israeli Independence Day, as the U.S., Israel and the world face an historic health and economic crisis of staggering proportions, it is critical that we strengthen our bonds of friendship and continue to work together to confront this global pandemic. Today on this important anniversary, and every day, we pray for the continued health and safety of all of our communities and rededicate ourselves to securing a future of peace, security and prosperity for all Israel's citizens."
