Pelosi Statement Ahead of President Obama's Speech on Long-Term Deficit Reduction

September 18, 2011

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement tonight in advance of President Obama's speech tomorrow on long-term deficit reduction:

"I welcome President Obama's continued emphasis on creating jobs for America's middle class and for his commitment to reducing our long-term deficit as we work to promote economic growth.

"In particular, I am very encouraged by the President's focus on the need for tax reform that calls on all Americans to contribute their fair share. And while we await the specific details of the President's full proposal, we remain committed to strengthening Medicare and Medicaid.

"The Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction and the entire Congress must seriously consider the President's proposals as we craft a balanced approach that addresses the number one concern of Americans — jobs."
