Pelosi Statement on 75 Years of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization

San Francisco – Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on 75 years since the North Atlantic Treaty was signed establishing NATO:

“When President Harry Truman signed the North Atlantic Treaty 75 years ago, he called the Alliance that it established a ‘long step toward permanent peace in the whole world.’  In the decades that followed, NATO has guaranteed the security of the American people and our allies – serving as a bulwark for freedom and peace around the world.

“Today, under the effective leadership of Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, NATO continues to stand strong against a rising tide of tyranny.  Despite Putin’s attempts to splinter our Alliance with his war against Ukraine, the transatlantic partnership is more united than ever before, thanks to the determined leadership of Joe Biden.  On this monumental anniversary, we reaffirm that America's commitment to NATO remains bipartisan and ironclad – and that we will never waver in our defense of democracy.”
