Washington, D.C. â€" Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Democratic leaders held a press availability following the Democratic Caucus meeting with President Obama in the Capitol Visitor’s Center this evening. The Speaker also thanked Budget Committee Chairman John Spratt for his outstanding leadership. Below are the Speaker’s opening remarks:
"If I just may add to what the majority leader and the caucus chairman said: there are some people who say: ‘Why are we doing all of this? We have the economy to deal with, financial institutions, etc. Why are we doing education, health care, and energy in the budget?’
"And nobody said it better than President Obama in his address to a joint session of Congress last month, when he clearly spelled out that in order to turn the economy around, we had to make those investments. That was part of his presentation tonight, and I want to just say that I had the privilege of presenting â€" on behalf of the Congress â€" the flag that was flown over the Capitol when the President made those remarks to the joint session. Because those words, those words, our words ‘for liberty and justice for all’ â€" the justice, for people, again, to be able to realize the American Dream.
"It’s a proud night for us tonight and it’s going to be a great week for us. But the connection in the budget between investments in health care, education, energy, job creation, deficit reducing and growth to the economy with a tax cut for 95 percent of the American people. That is what will energize the economy and our Members see that connection.
"Thank you all."
