Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and House Democratic supporters of the P5+1 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) joined military veterans and Gold Star families for a press event in support of the historic Iran nuclear agreement today. Below are the Leader's remarks:
"Good evening. Tonight, we are on the eve of the start of the House debate on the JCPOA with Iran. We have gathered with military veterans and Gold Star families to express our strong support for this historic agreement.
"We stand here united, in observance of this transformational nuclear agreement – an agreement founded not on trust, but on verification, vigilance and enforcement. We congratulate the President on this agreement, and we observe that the united determination of the global community was able to bring Iran to the table to agree to the sweeping reductions and unprecedented inspections. We have been informed by the expertise of scientists and diplomats – and we will hear some of their words this evening – the judgment of military leaders and women and men of faith, and we will hear their words, the wisdom of the extraordinary constellation of experts who have made their voices heard in support of the strength of this agreement.
"Tonight, we stand, Members of Congress on the steps of the Capitol as Members, totally committed to preventing a nuclear-armed Iran. As friends of Israel, dedicated to strengthening Israel's security, and inspired by the men and women who have borne the terrible cost of war overseas. We are humbled and honored by the sacrifices made by veterans and their families, who join us here tonight.
"I am pleased to introduce a retired soldier who served our country as an infantryman for 30 years, culminating as Chief of Infantry. He led the effort to rebuild the Iraqi security forces in 2003. He is the son of a fighter pilot KIA – killed in action – in Vietnam, father to three soldiers and he is married to a veteran. We are honored to be joined and please welcome Major General Paul Eaton. Thank you so much.
