Washington, D.C. â€" House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi joined House and Senate Democrats today at an event to unveil their national security agenda, â€Å"Real Security: The Democratic Plan to Secure America and Restore Our Leadership in the World.” Below are Pelosi’s remarks:

â€Å"Today, a united Democratic Party stands together with a clear message that real security for all Americans is our first priority. Democrats are committed to projecting America’s power to protect the American people and defend our freedom â€" whenever and wherever it is threatened.

â€Å"The world is changing and so are the threats we face. They range from an improvised explosive device to a nuclear weapon. From a threat as small as a virus to one as large as Katrina. From a lone wolf terrorist to a rogue nation. From the weakness of energy dependence to the fury of despair.

â€Å"In these times of unprecedented challenge and change, real leadership demands that we prepare for the threats that exist today and those that will emerge tomorrow. Democrats are proposing tough and smart policies that recognize that a stronger America begins at home.

â€Å"We are charting a new direction that is in the interest of all Americans and demonstrates that Democrats are the party of real security.

â€Å"Democrats stand together to: ensure unparalleled military strength; to defeat terrorism and stop the spread of weapons of mass destruction; to implement the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission and we intend to do it on the first day that we take over the Congress of the United States; to make 2006 a year of significant transition in Iraq; to prepare effectively for natural disasters and epidemics; and to free America from our dangerous dependence on foreign oil and we intend to do it within 10 years.

â€Å"Secretary Albright, General Clark, President Schaitberger, and Air Force veteran Joe Wynn have fought for American security on the world stage, on the battle field, and in America’s neighborhoods.

â€Å"God has blessed America with their leadership, and with the patriotism, courage, and sacrifice of the brave men and women in uniform who protect our country at home and abroad. We must honor these dedicated public servants by giving them all they need to make our nation stronger and safer.

â€Å"‘To provide for the common defense.’ These words from the preamble to our Constitution are our first responsibility as elected officials, and they are our promise to the American people.”
